HUEBRIX is a challenging logic puzzle game that may potentially cause your brain to spontaneously explode. It pushes players to use their thinking caps in order to solve over 300 levels. The problem is that many of these levels must be unlocked via individual in-app purchases (IAP).

The goal of this puzzler is to move colored lines around on a grid of white squares. Players then use their finger to drag a path from the many different starting blocks. Each of these blocks has a number to indicate how many squares gamers are required to fill.

Players must create the correct path with each color block. There are more and more challenges added along the way such as the ability for a line to only move in one direction, grey squares that block the path, and more.

Each level is timed. Tapping on the restart button clears the board, but the clock remains where it is at. Once a level is started, gamers must finish it. There are hint features available for players who get stuck on a level. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded at the end of every stage, but players won’t earn them if they take too long or use the hint option.

There’s a lot to love about HUEBRIX. The gameplay is addictive, the controls are smooth and responsive and the music helps calm the nerves during the fast-paced levels. Also, the graphics are simple and have a pixelated retro appeal to them that is enjoyable.

HUEBRIX still has a few areas where it could use some improvement. For one, there is no option to pay a flat fee to unlock everything. The game comes with a starter pack of 35 levels, an easy pack with 30 levels, and two medium modes with 30 levels each. There are 17 additional packs available through IAPs that range from easy to insane. While everything isn’t unlocked at once, it is possible for players to create and share your own levels, which is a pleasant surprise.

Additionally, there are no GameCenter leaderboards or achievements even though it appears that way at first. GameCenter is actually used for players to share their created levels with friends. Adding leaderboards or achievements would help amp up the replay value. Hopefully a future update integrates this feature.

HUEBRIX is perfect for fans of addictive puzzle games as well as anyone who likes a good challenge. It’s similar in style to Tetris and Snake, but it has enough originality to keep gamers from feeling like they’ve never played it before. With progressively challenging levels and a huge number of stages, it’s definitely worth adding to the game collection if you can get past the IAPs.
