2013 NCAA Basketball Tournament Android Apps – Droid Life

The 2013 NCAA men’s college basketball tournament kicks off tomorrow, marking my favorite time of the year in sports. We already launched our bracket challenge (which you should join), but wanted to make sure you also were up on your Android app game to help you fully keep track of the action. If you aren’t able to spend each Thursday and Friday in a bar with a pitcher or two of beer and some wings for the next month, then you may want to take advantage of apps that will let you stream all games from anywhere on your mobile device. You’ll also want to keep track of those brackets, …

Toshiba Best and Worst Notebook Brands 2013 Rating

Reviews (9/20) Last year, Toshiba introduced a number of innovative notebooks. Some systems impressed, such as the ultra-widescreen Satellite U845W, but others fell flat. In all, we reviewed 12 systems, one of which (the $ 599 Satellite P845-S4200) earned an Editors’ Choice award, and eight received ratings of 3.5 or 4 stars. Unfortunately, two of the brand’s notebooks, the U925t and the U845-S402, were awarded just 2.5 stars, which brought down the company’s overall score.  Design (8/15) Ho-hum designs sunk Toshiba’s score in this category to the bottom of the list. While wafer-thin, the Portégé Z935-P300 was just a retread of last year’s Ultrabook with Windows 8 slapped on. And …

Acer (yes, Acer) thinks Windows 8 PC sales will do better in 2013

That's not true. the 3317u in the w700 is rated at 1.7Ghz,which it never goes below. Nobody is screwing you over. What you are mad about though is the turbo boost not running at its full potential. Turbo boost can go up to 2.6Ghz when temps permit, and when the temperature starts getting high,it starts downclocking towards 1.7Ghz to cool the chip down. Except, acer disables turboboost when you hit a certain temperature,a temperature that's much lower than what the chip can handle. Therefore you are not getting the best performance this chip can give. The reason they MAY be doing this is because their cooling is insufficient to get the chip …

Acer, who revealed last week that it plans to ship a Windows RT-based tablet later this year, will reportedly ship around 10 million units using various operating systems in 2013 alone, a 400-percent increase compared to 2012′s numbers. The company is already shipping between 200K and 300K units of its 7-inch $ 150 Iconia B1-A71 tablet each month. According to unnamed sources, Acer is slated to launch an 8-inch model and a 10-inch Iconia model for the entry-level segment in the near future. Dell Best and Worst Notebook Brands 2013 Rating

A struggling Dell has decided to take itself private at a time its PC shipments have dropped nearly 13 percent over the past year. There have been some bright spots, including the very nifty XPS 12 convertible. However, Dell’s tech support was absolutely horrible during our last survey, with one rep pushing a sweepstakes on us. The result is a seventh place finish out of nine brands.  Reviews (13/20) Buoyed by Alienware, which picked up three Editors’ Choice awards in the last year and an even-rarer 5-star review (the M18x R2), Dell came in third for Reviews. The company managed a tie with HP, in part because of the 4-star …

Early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro succumbs to fan speed issue

Retina MacBook Pro owners beware: If you have an early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro, you might have an issue with your shiny new laptop’s fan speed. According to YouTube user Oyinko, as well as a host of people over on the official Apple support forums, the fan in the aforementioned MacBook Pro model will ramp up its speed to a potentially detrimental level regardless of the unit’s temperature. Oyinko notes that the reason why this specific generation of Retina MacBook Pros has the issue is that Apple changed out the SSD from a Samsung to a Sandisk, and the new Sandisk creates a conflict in fan management. The issue is …

Acer still plans to launch Windows RT tablet in 2013

Acer executives have been very open in the past several months about the fact they didn't like Microsoft entering into the PC hardware space, starting with the Windows RT-based Surface tablet. Acer went ahead and launched a number of Windows 8-based PCs in 2012 with touch screens (including the thin and light Acer Aspire S7 notebook) but previously announced plans to launch a Windows RT tablet were put on hold until at least the second quarter of 2013. This week Acer reconfirmed its plans to offer a Windows RT tablet sometime in 2013, but ITWorld.com reports that Acer executive Oliver Ahrens would not confirm a specific launch date. Ahrens said …

Lenovo may become the number one smartphone manufacturer in China’s market come 2013, ending Samsung’s reign. PC maker Lenovo is currently the number two player in the Chinese smartphone market, but that may change very soon. A report by Gartner claims that, by 2013, Lenovo is projected to become the top handset manufacturer in its home market of China. The research firm released a statement on Wednesday outlining Lenovo’s advantages in the Chinese smartphone industry that could boost the manufacturer to snag Samsung’s throne. “It is the only local smartphone player that can compete with top global brands in China, thanks to its household brand recognition, nationwide distribution, strong portfolio and reasonable …
