My Samsung Series 5 ultrabook can only access the internet with an ethernet cable, not through wifi. Did anyone else have this problem? How did you fix it?

My iPad is now complete.

I’ve used iPad notepad app, Penultimate, since I’ve owned an iPad, and I bought an iPad 1 on day, well, one. I love the idea of keeping several Moleskine-type notebooks on my iPad to carry around with me.

That’s when I have my iPad. Sometimes, I don’t. Or I have my iPad mini. Or my iPhone. Or just my Mac (I’m spoiled, I know). That’s when I use Evernote, so I can take notes on any of these devices and have them accessible on any of the others.

When I found out that Penultimate is now both free and syncs with Evernote, I knew I had to share with you how to get it all set up so you could have the joy that is synced Evernote Penultimate notes!

Head over to the App Store and download Penultimate for free. Launch it on your iPad with a tap, and you’ll notice a big difference right away. This Penultimate is powered by Evernote from the get go, so tap on Sign In if you already have an Evernote account, or Create Account if you don’t and sign up.

Once logged into your Evernote account, tap on the “Welcome to Penultimate” notebook and swipe along the bottom toolbar to navigate through the pages of this special tutorial notebook. You’ll learn how to change pen shape, colors, and erase stuff in a notebook, select, copy, and paste stuff around the notebooks, browse thumbnails of all your pages in the notebook, and search your notebooks, even handwritten notes.

Now, open up Evernote on your iPhone or Mac, and log in. You’ll see that there’s a new Notebook in there, and it’s called, funnily enough, Penultimate. Open that one with a click, and you’ll see the tutorial notebook, and any other notes or notebooks you’ve created since. Slick, right?

There’s no reason now not to use Penultimate, especially now it’s powered by Evernote and is totally free. Did I mention free? Go grab it and let me know how great you think it is in the comments below.

The launcher would be bare if those were all the controls it offered. Therefore, a user can add more customized actions to help tailor the app to their needs. Pressing the + button brings up a menu to with several different options. Options included within the menu are:

Adding an Icon Panel adds a row for the user to add more shortcuts, too. In a sense, it just adds a placeholder until the user decides what app shall take its place. Linking to a person allows the user to quickly text message, email, FaceTime or map the route to a contact. This is very similar to your favorites list in the phone app on the iPhone. Create New includes options much like the previously mentioned choices for creating a new contact and calendar entry.

Search allows the user to quickly search using Google or Bing utilizing the clipboard contents. Launch a Website will put a shortcut to the user specified website. For websites that require constant monitoring or just your favorite site, setting this up might be easier than using bookmarks. The Launch App option will put shortcuts to apps within the launcher. These shortcuts could be for just opening the app or for more powerful actions such as creating an action in OmniFocus.

Within the launcher are two different rows, including icon panel rows and launcher rows. The icon panel rows include multiple icons for different app actions. The launcher rows include just one action for an app. I tried to figure out the true difference between these categories and unfortunately, I could not realize why one would be preferred over the other. Both rows make it easy to push the action so maybe it is a style preference.

Reminders The reminders section of the app is the other main part of Launch+. The reminders section allows users to schedule actions. These can include reminders to launch apps. In testing I found three useful scenarios for this. I try to do some type of devotional everyday. I have found the easiest way for me to accomplish is to do it in the morning. Setting up a reminder to launch the Bible app helps me remember to perform this action.

If you find yourself opening the same apps at certain times of the day regularly, using reminders could help alleviate the tediousness of the task.

I also have a daily task to read every night. This task does not apply to reading on the Internet, but must be in book form. Performing this action every night is helping me reach my goal of reading more books. Using Launch+ I can setup a reminder to read every night. The final use case is handy for GTD (Getting Things Done) users. Ever have trouble remembering to perform your weekly review? I forget all the time and I just did not like creating a task to review my other tasks. With Launch+ I can schedule my weekly review and have an alert let me know to perform my review every Sunday evening.

Question by RadGirl11: What does it mean if someone has “root access” to my cell phone?
I’ve heard a lot about “root access” lately and am not sure what it means exactly regarding cell phones.

Answer by joe.attaboy
Having root access usually applies to Android phones (they call it “jailbreaking” on Apple’s iPhone).

Having root simply means that the device is unlocked and gives the owner unrestricted access to the phone operating system. It’s called that because in the Unix/Linux/BSD computer community, being “root” means you can do anything on the system, like a system administrator, only better. There’s a lot of responsibility to being the root user on a system, since you can do irreversible damage to a system if you’re not careful.

It’s not quite that scary on a phone. You still need to keep the phone secure, but it’s not as easy to do anything damaging without really trying.

People do this on Android phones to install updated and customized “ROMs” containing newer or hacked versions of Android. I own two Nexus Ones (mine and my wife’s). I rooted them immediately after I got them and installed updated ROM images to get newer versions of Android.

With a name like “Pimp My ROM,” how can one not give it a try. All it needs is Xzibit’s face plastered on their banner and it’ll be perfect! Pimp My ROM is a cool little script that allows the user to easily install hacks, tweaks and many other things into their custom ROM. A Learning a Day: Frictionless Access to /a-learning-a-day-frictionless-access-to/ /a-learning-a-day-frictionless-access-to/#comments Thu, 09 Aug 2012 17:43:51 +0000 extreme http://www.padreviewsandtips.com/apps/a-learning-a-day-frictionless-access-to.html Continue reading

I got my new iPad a week ago and while I have some plans for some intensive use coming up, I’ve been fiddling with it over the past few days and discovering uses for it. Aside from the fact that it takes ‘keeping in touch’ to a whole new level (clarity of FaceTime, Skype is incredible), the biggest plus has been something else.

Two nights ago, I was hoping to do ten minutes of reading before going off to sleep. I wanted to read something light but didn’t have any ‘light’ books. So, I clicked on my iPad and searched for the Kindle app. Kindle app unavailable in Singapore. Alright, iBooks then. Within a few seconds, I was looking at the iBooks store and voila! I had access to an incredible number of free books – Classics like Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Sherlock Holmes and many more.

A couple of touches later, I was lying down comfortably reading ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’. I’ve been reading the book over the past couple of days and am into my 3rd story. I absolutely love the reading experience on the iPad.

Technology has gotten a lot of flak from the media for apparently destroying the younger generation’s love for books. I find that to be a funny accusation. In the last five years alone, I have read more books thanks to Audible apps on my phones than I’ve probably read in all my previous years put together. And I can only see this increasing thanks to the iPad.

At the end of the day, my guess is that youngsters imitate their elders and role models. If we spend all our time on our gadgets on Facebook and Angry Birds, it’s unfair if we expect them to be any different. And if that’s the case, let’s stop pointing our fingers at technology and look within.

Free books on the iBooks store, for me, was an invitation to read. Maybe I’m being naive here but I don’t know of many other generations that had such frictionless access to great stuff for free. The question, as always, is whether we put it to good use because technology, like all other things, is what we make of it..

It is a wonderful time to be alive.
