Sony makes Experimental Firefox OS build available for the Xperia E

Sony announced Wednesday afternoon on the Sony Mobile Developer Blog that owners of the Xperia E will get a chance to test out an experimental build of Firefox OS via a downloadable ROM. The company has also warned that the process is for advanced developers and it should not be tried by a consumer without developer skills. Keep in mind that this ROM is labeled as experimental and will by no means serve as a daily driver. This means that there is a lack of cellular data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth due to a lack of radio connectivity. Sony has also warned that the SD card might be unstable and that touch sensitivity has …

Dell Has A New Platform As A Service That Actually Makes Sense

Dell has a new platform as a service (PaaS) and it actually makes sense. The service is called Project Fast PaaS, part of the new Dell Cloud Labs, which also includes Project Sputnik, the Linux laptop for developers and Crowbar, the open-source cloud deployment framework. Crowbar was originally created to support its “OpenStack- and Hadoop-powered offerings.” FastPaaS and the new Dell Cloud Labs reflects a paradox that I felt all week at Dell World. While Fast PaaS represents the innovation happening at Dell, as with any big enterprise company, it is dependent on making big deals with high margins that serve the basic demands of large enterprises. On Tuesday, I moderated a …

Lenovo makes the $1,499 ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch official

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the company’s flagship business ultrabook launched earlier this year to much praise. Once Windows 8 dropped, shoppers could add that OS to the Carbon if they desired, it would just lack touch input. If that sounds like a horrible way to live, never fear. Today you can finally buy a Thinkpad X1 Carbon with touch starting at $ 1,499. The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Touch is still a slim and sleek 14-inch ultrabook, though that finger friendliness adds some weight and thickness. This X1 is 3.4 pounds vs the original’s 3 pounds and measures 20.8mm at its thickest vs 18.9mm. Even with these additions the …

Q&A: How can I print to a printer without installing all the crapware that HP makes you install?

Question by Brian: How can I print to a printer without installing all the crapware that HP makes you install? I have an HP desktjet 3930 printer that is hooked up to my ancient desktop (Word ’97) and I wanna print a Word 2010 document on it but there are certain elements that I NEED but will not work with Word ’97 and I really don’t wanna install the HP bloatware. Any workarounds? Just to clarify, my NEW computer has word 2010 but not the HP printing software and my OLD computer has word 97 but it does have the HP printing software. And I only have one word 2010 …

BBVA Compass makes apps a priority with Kindle Fire, Windows Phone banking

BBVA Compass is proving that it is critical to have a presence on every mobile platform with new applications for the Kindle Fire and Windows Phone. BBVA Compass has been active in the mobile space in the past year with apps available for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android devices. In particular, the company is going after the Kindle Fire because of its low price-point as a way to expand its tablet offerings. “The Kindle Fire has been very successful – in fact, Amazon said a few months ago in a press release that the Kindle Fire was the No. 1-selling product at its online store and that it had captured …

Apple iPhoto iPad app makes editing and organizing photos easy

From the moment you install and open Apple’s iPhoto app for iPad, you see an app that’s clean, clear, and uncluttered. It’s simple to use without being simplistic or dumbed down. After using it for a short while, I do have a few quibbles with the app—but overall, I’m quite impressed. Getting started: When you launch iPhoto, the main page displays one of four sections: Albums, Photos, Events, and Journals. Each allows you to access the same photos in different ways. For example, Photos displays images individually, but Events are grouped by date. Journals, which I’ll get to in a moment, are custom layouts that you create yourself. And Albums …

Index Card iPad App Makes Organizing Stories or World Domination Schemes Easy [Review]

Index Card allows users to organize their stories, articles or thoughts without adding a lot of unnecessary weight to the app. When I first tried Index Card about two months ago, I tried it against a number of other apps that contained similar index cards features. For the sheer act of organizing a story, which is why I originally downloaded the app, Index Card came out on top above other apps like, for example, Storyist. Storyist, while working great as a story writing app, didn’t offer some of the features in its index cards feature that the Index Cards app offered. And if you want to check out the app, …
