Custom ROM Friday: Shiny ROM for Verizon Galaxy Nexus – Droid Life

Since the departure of Pete Alfonso and updates to his Bugless Beast ROM, folks have been on the search for a new minimal, stock AOSP build that brings smooth operation and vanilla Android feel. We received a few requests to make sure everyone new about a somewhat newcomer to the custom ROM scene called, Shiny.  The developer has been building multiple ROM’s from source, but this is his first published work for the toro Galaxy Nexus. It brings a complete OTA feel to the device, running Android 4.2.2. What will make this different from your stock firmware though is the replacement of the stock browser app with Google Chrome, the ROM is …

Acer and HP working on spicing up notebook designs

Is the traditional clamshell laptop design headed the way of the dinosaur? DigiTimes is reporting that both Acer and HP are working on innovative new designs for their forthcoming notebooks, specifically those based on Intel’s new Haswell chip architecture. The Haswell chip is destined for Ultrabooks, a category created by Intel that includes super thin notebooks with low-power chips and solid-state drives. So what can we expect from the two companies? Acer is said to be working on a rotatable hinge that could allow for a notebook to morph into a tablet and just as easily switch back for typing purposes. DigiTimes says that this convertible laptop could launch as …

Hands on: HP Slate 7 review

After its aborted efforts with WebOS and the TouchPad two years ago, it appears that HP thinks now is the time to get involved with tablets. Here is the Slate 7 – a 7-inch tablet running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. And why not? After all, though we think of tablets as a market that’s ‘Apple plus others’, it’s worth remembering that it’s actually in its infancy both in terms of the technology itself and the number of people globally that actually have a tablet – think how complex or widespead the PC or a mobile phone were after only a few years. And, of course, it’s only been three years …

Hands on: Asus Fonepad review

As if the Padfone isn’t strange enough a concept, what about this: a 7-inch Android 4.1 tablet that can also make calls. Meet Fonepad. Yes, that’s right – Asus now have two different but similar products called essentially the same name but in a slightly different order. Crazy times. Check out our hands-on with the Padfone in the video below: Unlike the Padfone, which is a smartphone with a tablet shell, the Fonepad is a device rather like the Nexus 7 (which Asus also makes for Google) but with the ability to make calls. It was leaked back in February. Asus reckons that you won’t hold it up to your …

Video: First Look at Android 4.2.2 on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus – Droid Life

I really hope you’re not trying to imply I should have just fixed the radio/signal issues myself…or that I am somehow “not up to” a complex device such as this…. FYI: I’ve been building AOKP for toro and the Fascinate since b35. I know my way around Linux and Android just fine. I’ve run countless ROMs and kernels on every Android device I have (currently nX, Spectrum, G’Nex and Fascinate). This is *not* an issue of “this stuff is just too complicated”…it’s an issue of “it really should actually work as a phone”. I’m sorry if you don’t see it that way. I’m on my 3rd replacement with this device. …

Download: Android 4.2.2 (JDQ39) for the Galaxy Nexus LTE on Verizon – Droid Life

Over the weekend, our buddy El Madhatter sent us a screenshot of his Galaxy Nexus test device which had received an update to Android 4.2.2 (JDQ39). This caused some excitement around the DL community, as in the past when we had seen leaks from him, they were quickly released for our own flashing. Unfortunately this time around, he had already taken the update and was unable to grab the file URL, thanks to a busy schedule. Well, folks, he finally found some time and wit ha little help from XDA member oldblue910 has grabbed the direct Google download of the update for your flashing pleasure.  *In order to apply this update …

Tablet Tuesday: Get a 10-inch Acer Iconia for $199.99 shipped

Looking for a big tablet? The iPad famously (or infamously) starts at $ 499. The Google Nexus 10: $ 399. Even the comparatively affordable Kindle Fire 8.9 will set you back $ 299. The Iconia A210 features a 1.2GHz Tegra 3 processor, 16GB of storage (expandable via microSD cards), the aforementioned 10.1-inch screen (running at a competitive, if not spectacular, 1,280×800), and Android 4.0. Acer will push out an Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update in the (presumably) not-too-distant future. The tablet weighs 1.5 pounds, so it’s a bit on the heavy side, and it has only a front-facing camera. It also lacks an HDMI output, an issue only if you …
