Retina MacBook Pro customer launches class action lawsuit against Apple over alleged LG display flaw

Since Apple unveiled its first Retina MacBook Pro with the 15.4-inch model in June, there have been a growing number of complaints from customers experiencing issues with the product. By far the most reported problem is one that causes a burn-in or ghosting problem on the device’s display. It has resulted in a support thread boasting over 364,769 views. Apple uses two display suppliers for the device, LG and Samsung, and it wasn’t until months later that many started speculating the source of the issue was with LG (as highlighted in the video above). Today, one MacBook Pro user named Beau Hodges has decided to launch a class-action lawsuit against Apple in a federal court …

Patent suit takes aim at Apple, Dell, others over encryption

A security group has taken aim at some of the biggest computer and software makers, claiming their products infringe on one or more of its patents. Maz Encryption Technologies, a Delaware company made up of two former employees of Maz Technologies, filed suits last week against Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Lenovo, and Research In Motion (now BlackBerry). In seven separate complaints, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Maz accuses the companies of infringing on one or more of its three patents covering encryption and user authentication technologies — low level security found in computers and other portable devices. In the case of Dell, Lenovo, …

Google faces new privacy concerns over Android app market

Third-party developers on Google Play, the app market for Android devices, receive the personal details of anyone who buys their apps, potentially violating the terms of a 2011 privacy settlement. Australian developer Dan Nolan Tuesday that he received the name, suburb and email address of every person who purchased his app on Google Play. The purchasers of the app, however, were not notified that their personal information was being sent to a third-party. “Let me make this crystal clear, every App purchase you make on Google Play gives the developer your name, suburb and email address with no indication that this information is actually being transferred,” Nolan wrote. “Under no …

Dispute grows over cable TV iPad apps

Over the years, cable companies have criticized networks and studios for opening up too much content online. Time Warner is the first to offer a streaming app (below), running ads that proclaim, “Make any room a TV room.” Some content producers aren’t happy — privately, for now — and legal threats are flying around, reports NYT’s Brian Stelter. In response, Time Warner has launched an ad campaign that heralds “more freedom to watch on more screens” and asked, “Why do some TV networks want to take it away?” Meanwhile, Cablevision is due …

Inversion [Review] – A case of technology over creativity

Grand ideas are one thing, execution is another. Sometimes they can co-exist; the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, the internet and man landing on the moon, for example. At other times, the idea proves too much and the final product is lacking; Disney’s John Carter, the DeLorean, New Coke and the McDonald’s pizza. Unfortunately, you can add Inversion to that second list. You can add a good few games to that list, but Inversion will be somewhere near the top of the heap. The premise for Saber Interactive’s Inversion involves a plethora of tried and tested science fiction clichés and ideas that have proven successful with countless movies, games, …
