Michael Dell Says the PC Refresh Cycle Is Coming, Really

Today, he took to CNBC to talk about that as well as the state of the PC market. He reiterated a few familiar messages: Dell now derives more than half its gross margins from businesses that are new to Dell, namely software and services. And so Dell is less the PC company that everyone remembers and more a full-range IT company that “helps its customers succeed.” Still, it sells a lot of PCs and derives about half its revenue from sales to both consumers and businesses. And now that Microsoft has gotten Windows 8 out the door, where’s the groundswell of PCs sales? As yet, we’re still waiting. Analysts at …

Nexus S and Xoom will remain on 4.1.2 says JBQ

On a recent post made on the Android Building group, Google AOSP Technical Lead Jean-Baptiste Queru broke the news that the Motorolla Xoom and Samsung Nexus S will not be updated to the latest version of Android. Although JBQ didn’t clearly mention that this will be the end of the line for the said devices, the future isn’t looking so bright for these two ageing gadgets. What’s intriguing about it though is how one device can run Android 4.1.2 quite smoothly and not be upgraded to Android 4.2. This makes us wonder if the new features in the latest iteration are just too much for the Xoom and Nexus to …

HP Says Surface Tablet is Slow, A Little ”Kludgey”

HP’s Todd Bradley talks about Microsoft’s Surface, the company’s tablet and smartphone strategy. Todd Bradley, the executive vice president of HP’s Printing and Personal Systems Group, recently said that Microsoft’s self-produced Surface tablet isn’t competition. Outside Acer executives who were publicly vocal about the company’s opposition against the Surface launch, Bradley’s own views aren’t surprising, as most Windows 8 partners have either welcomed Microsoft’s hardware entry, or shrugged it off just as Bradley has done. But his personal view of the tablet is a little surprising. “I’d hardly call Surface competition,” Bradley said in an interview with IDG Enterprise. “One, very limited distribution. It tends to be slow and a …

No new HP smartphone coming in 2013, says CEO Meg Whitman

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new smartphone from HP, and according to a new statement from CEO Meg Whitman, that won’t be changing any time soon. While speaking at an analyst event yesterday, Whitman said that HP doesn’t “have any plans to introduce a smartphone in 2013,” reports ComputerWorld U.K. The executive did recognize the need for HP to get into the game, though, saying that HP must start thinking about what it’s “unique play” will be and that, if her company doesn’t have a smartphone or similar device in five years, HP will “be locked out of a huge segment of the population in many countries …

Speaking with Michael Arrington at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that “we’ve had a bunch of missteps on [mobile],” specifically referring to its mobile app strategy. “The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML5 instead of native… We burnt two years.” He said that the company would also drop HTML5 in its Android app as well, and that a native version would be coming “soon.” “Native is going to be the approach.” “We’re betting completely on it,” he said, referring to native apps. “Native is going to be the approach that we go with for iOS and Android.” Much of …
